What is this input used for? We often perform CAN bus logging ourselves, and in many cases it is necessary to have the location where an event occurred marked in the log. The PP2CAN software is equipped with the Log notes function, which allows you to insert notes into the log. Since the insertion has to be done manually by clicking on the corresponding button, this note has a delay, however it allows inserting up to 8 different notes (texts) into the saved (exported) log.
The Marker input function works similarly. Since this event of switching on or off this input is marked with the same time stamp as the CAN message (with microsecond resolution), this marker is inserted in the correct place also in the log window for possible accurate time reading. The information about the occurrence of the event is thus much more accurate.
It is thus possible to connect, for example, an end sensor to this input and measure the response of the system - how long it takes to generate data on the CAN, to connect the digital output of another device or to connect a hand-held button with a power supply from, for example, USB and insert a note manually much faster than by clicking. There are many uses.
The PP2CAN software version 3.022 allows you to set up a Marker message in the Timing accuracy tool to also measure the period instead of a CAN message. The input thus allows to measure the approximate frequency of its switching up to approx. 6kHz.
